Freckles are small, light-brown spots located superficially in the skin. They most often occur on the cheeks and nose, but can also develop on the exposed parts of the back of the hands, arms, shoulders and upper back in individuals who have received a lot of sun or UV-exposure. They tend to darken after sun exposure, and lighten again on protecting from the sun. Sun protection, such as reducing sun exposure, using a hat or umbrella, sunscreen use and avoiding outdoor activities from 10am to 4pm when the UV intensity is the highest, is important to prevent further sun damage to the skin. Treatment to lighten existing freckles include creams, chemical peels, IPL or pigment laser.
