As we age, our skin naturally starts to lose its elasticity and thus begin to sag and hollow, forming wrinkles, tear troughs, laugh lines and more. This results in the individual looking much older and tired.
Enter filler injections—made of clinical-grade ingredients, they can be injected into areas of the face that have lost volume, thereby restoring a smoother, fuller, and more youthful and alert appearance.
It can be used to treat sunken facial areas, creases, lines, wrinkles, as well as sunken acne and chicken pox scars. Fillers can also be used to create a lifting effect or to shape the face (e.g. mid-cheek lift), elongate the chin, shape the jawline and enhance the ‘apples’ of the cheek.
Very light hyaluronic acid fillers can even be injected superficially into the skin to provide hydration and a pleasing plumping effect that reduces the appearance of fine wrinkles.

Hyaluronic acid, the primary ingredient in popular fillers like Juvéderm™ and Restylane™, increases collagen production on top of restoring lost volume. As the substance fills up the affected area, it simultaneously creates more firming connective tissue, providing longer-lasting results. (Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that attracts water molecules, giving you fuller and tighter skin.)
Other collagen-stimulating fillers, such as Radiesse™ and Ellanse™ which provide similarly long-lasting results (up to 2 years), are also available.
Which type(s) and amount of filler you use will depend on the severity of your volume loss and your specific needs and preferences. In experienced hands, different types of fillers can be carefully combined for the specific aesthetic concerns present, allowing your dermatologist to achieve even better combined results that look natural and aesthetically pleasing.
When the ideal filler has been chosen and the treatment areas identified, the dermatologist will proceed to sterilize the area and possibly apply a topical numbing agent.
The filler will then be carefully injected in order to ensure even and precise distribution. In some cases, multiple injection sites may be necessary to achieve the intended result.
In most cases, the process shouldn’t take more than half an hour, and you can resume your daily activities right after. There may be minor redness and swelling initially, but will resolve on its own shortly.
If it is your first time considering this option, it is normal to be nervous. However, rest assured that the discomfort is minimal, lasts just a few minutes, and numbing agents are often used.
Furthermore, with the variety of fillers available today, you are bound to find something that suits your skin and preferences well.
And unlike surgery which is permanent, fillers are temporary (requiring repeat treatments), thus you do not have to fear disliking the results and regretting the procedure—because the results are temporary and adjustable.
